Aerotech unveils LaserTurn160 for medical manufacturing

Yesterday

Aerotech has introduced the LaserTurn160, a new cylindrical laser machining motion platform boasting significantly increased throughput for medical device manufacturing.

The LaserTurn160 is designed to enhance precision and efficiency, reportedly achieving up to 40% higher throughput compared to similar systems. This advancement aims to meet the specific demands of medical device production, including applications such as stent cutting, catheter fabrication, and guidewire manufacturing.

The new system features high-dynamic performance capabilities, using direct-drive motors and crossed-roller bearings for smooth motion. These design choices are intended to ensure the production of highly reproducible parts, particularly when used in conjunction with the Automation1 motion controller to balance precision and speed.

Brian Fink, Product Manager at Aerotech, commented, "The LaserTurn160 has established a new industry standard. With its ability to dramatically enhance throughput while maintaining excellent part quality, this platform is a game-changer in high-precision medical applications like stent cutting and hypo tube manufacturing, where process throughput and part reproducibility are vital."

The LaserTurn160's key features include options for dynamic rotary axes. The ASR1300 stage offers high-dynamic performance for tube diameters up to 4 mm, with speeds reaching 3000 rpm and accelerations up to 8000 rad/s2. The CCS130DR stage can process tube diameters up to 7.9 mm, aiming to provide high dynamics and versatility.

The system also includes precision workholding solutions, using pneumatically actuated collets to minimise unwanted tube motion during operation. Additionally, the platform supports Type-D collets and features an optional alignment gripper to accommodate processing tubes of various lengths and diameters.

The LaserTurn160 is designed for seamless integration into existing systems. It offers compatibility with wet and dry cutting configurations and includes front and rear tooling plates for convenient integration with bushings and other process equipment.
