AI success linked to digital overhaul, says Boomi chief

Today

Boomi Chairman and CEO Steve Lucas has released a new book warning that artificial intelligence (AI) will not succeed without a significant overhaul of digital infrastructure.

The publication, titled "Digital Impact: The Human Element of AI-Driven Transformation," addresses how years of digital expansion have left many organisations with disconnected systems and outdated architectures. These are now posing challenges for the implementation of modern AI technologies. Drawing from his leadership experiences at Adobe, SAP, and Marketo, Lucas provides a framework for leaders to address these digital fragmentation issues.

Lucas states, "AI is only as smart as the systems and data it runs on. Right now, most organisations are trying to build data skyscrapers on sand. They're pouring millions into AI while drowning in bad data, siloed systems, and chaotic architecture. But it's not all bad news when integration is done the right way, the way that puts human beings first."

The book presents a strategy for businesses to manage digital chaos and enhance their AI readiness. It includes insights and case studies from various sectors, demonstrating how different industries are adapting to AI's transformative impact. From banks and logistics companies to government agencies, the book offers examples of successful AI operationalisation aimed at achieving precision and purpose.

Lucas introduces the concept of the "Digital Impact Mission," which encourages leaders to focus on unifying technology, cleaning and connecting data, and re-architecting organisational operations for an AI-driven world. This mission is supported by several strategic imperatives:

  • Lead the Mission from the Top: Emphasising the role of CEOs in championing transformation with board-level accountability.
  • Fix Fragmentation First: Ensuring that AI has access to clean and connected real-time data.
  • Rethink SaaS: Transitioning from traditional software models to intelligent automation and outcome-based values.
  • Build for Human-AI Collaboration: Developing systems that facilitate human productivity and impactful work.
  • Design for Speed, Scale, and Precision: Moving away from legacy systems towards a composable and connected digital infrastructure.

The book includes insights from notable figures such as Larry Quinlan, former Global CIO of Deloitte; Mark Fields, former CEO of Ford Motor Company; Betsy Atkins, a corporate board leader and three-time CEO; Dr. Vishal Sikka, founder of Vianai and former CEO of Infosys; and Paul Cormier, former CEO of Red Hat. These contributions provide a detailed understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with AI transformation across industries.

Lucas's publication aims to guide leaders in addressing digital fragmentation and enabling organisations to successfully integrate AI into their operations. By adopting the principles outlined in the book, leaders can prepare their businesses for future demands and ensure AI's effectiveness.
