Google unveils Beam for AI-driven 3D video communication

Today

Google has introduced Google Beam, a 3D video communication platform evolving from its earlier Project Starline research project.

Google Beam aims to enhance video calls by using artificial intelligence to generate realistic 3D experiences without the need for specialised glasses or headsets. The platform leverages an AI volumetric video model to transform standard 2D video streams into 3D visuals, giving users a more natural sense of presence in remote interactions.

Andrew Nartker, General Manager for Google Beam, said, "The Google Beam platform will use AI to enable a new generation of devices that help people make meaningful connections, no matter where they are."

He added, "Our state-of-the-art AI volumetric video model is what makes these calls appear fully 3D from any perspective. It transforms standard 2D video streams into realistic 3D experiences, allowing you to connect in a more natural and intuitive way."

The platform combines Google's expertise in artificial intelligence and the capabilities of Google Cloud. This integration is intended to support enterprise-grade reliability and compatibility with existing business workflows, making the technology suitable for professional environments as well as casual communication.

According to Nartker, "Google Beam is built on the power and scale of Google Cloud, combined with our expertise in AI. This allows Google Beam to deliver enterprise-grade reliability, compatibility with your existing workflow and true-to-life 3D video communication."

He also emphasised the role of the AI model and light field display, stating, "The combination of our AI video model and our light field display creates a profound sense of dimensionality and depth. This is what allows you to make eye contact, read subtle cues and build understanding and trust as if you were face-to-face."

In addition to enhancing visual communication, Google Beam is exploring breakthroughs in speech translation. Integrated with Google Meet, the platform will support near real-time translated conversations while maintaining nuances such as voice, tone, and expression. This aims to facilitate seamless interaction across language barriers.

Google commented, "These nuanced, translated conversations feel like they're happening between people who are physically present, so they can communicate seamlessly despite the distance and language barriers. It's the first step in a broader vision to perfectly see and understand anyone around the world."

To extend the reach of Google Beam in workplace settings, Google is partnering with firms including Zoom and HP. Initial Google Beam devices from HP are expected to debut at industry events in the coming weeks, with availability for select customers planned for later in the year. Distribution will be supported by channel partners such as Diversified and AVI-SPL to bring the platform to organisations worldwide.

Industry adoption has already begun, with several companies preparing to integrate Google Beam into their operations. These include Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, Hackensack Meridian Health, Duolingo, and Recruit.

Angel Ayala, Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting, commented, "Deloitte is excited about Google Beam as a groundbreaking, innovative step of human connection in the digital age. Our teams and clients confirm this solution is not just a technological breakthrough but a reimagining of how we connect."
