AI traffic system in Pune boosts safety & transparency in city

SenSen.ai has partnered with the Pune Traffic Police to deploy an artificial intelligence-based traffic enforcement system on Fergusson College Road in Pune, India, as part of efforts to support India's smart city agenda.

The pilot scheme, which uses AI-powered cameras to monitor traffic and identify violations, commenced on one of Pune's busiest thoroughfares. The system is programmed to detect infractions such as illegal parking, wrong-side driving, and obstruction of traffic flow. Within its initial day of operation, the technology recorded 200 violations. Over the course of the first 13 days, a total of 742 electronic challans (e-challans) were issued. These included 201 notices for no parking, 420 for double parking, and 121 for travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Automated enforcement

The AI system sends immediate alerts of violations to the city's traffic control room, enabling rapid response by authorities without the need for manual observation. As part of the initiative, a large digital screen has been installed on Fergusson College Road to publicly display real-time breaches, aiming to increase transparency and public compliance.

"This AI-based system is a game-changer for urban traffic management," said Amitesh Kumar, Pune Police Commissioner. "By automating violation detection, we aim to improve road discipline and reduce manual workload for our officers."

The broader aim of the project is to improve road safety and streamline traffic flows by addressing violations that contribute to congestion and accidents. Authorities noted that early data from the deployment indicate meaningful improvements in rule adherence by road users on the monitored stretch.

Integrated platform

SenSen's Live Awareness Platform underpins the enforcement system. It combines data streams from a variety of sensors and camera feeds to offer a single, real-time overview of urban traffic dynamics. According to information provided, the technology has previously been adopted in several international cities including Brisbane, Singapore, and Chicago, supporting local governments in their own traffic management and public safety programmes.

The collaboration in Pune follows the deployment of similar AI traffic monitoring systems elsewhere in India, such as the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, where the mechanisms are used to monitor vehicle speeds and track other drivings violations to mitigate risks and promote road safety.

SenSen's partnership with the Pune Traffic Police aligns with a wider movement in India to incorporate artificial intelligence into urban infrastructure as cities balance rapid growth with increasing transportation and safety challenges.
