Sharp adds three space‑saving microwaves for Canada
Sharp Canada has added three new microwave ovens to its kitchen range: a countertop model with air-frying and convection functions, a turntable-free flatbed design, and a new over-the-range unit aimed at integrated kitchen installations.
The line-up targets common home cooking issues such as limited counter space, uneven heating, and the need for multiple appliances. The three models vary by size, installation type, and cooking features.
Three models
The first product, the SMC0985KSC, is a 3-in-1 microwave that also includes air fry and convection cooking. It has a 0.9 cubic foot capacity and is aimed at smaller kitchens where countertop space is limited. It includes multi-stage cooking, which can combine up to three functions in a single programme, including defrosting, cooking, and crisping.
The second model, the SMC1174KSC, uses a flatbed design rather than a rotating turntable. Sharp describes it as the first flatbed residential countertop microwave in Canada. The flatbed structure creates a 13 inch by 13 inch cooking surface, which suits larger rectangular dishes that can be awkward in a traditional turntable microwave. The model has a 1.1 cubic foot capacity.
The third addition is an over-the-range microwave, the SMO1961KSC. It has a 1.9 cubic foot capacity and fits a 30 inch installation width. It includes Sensor Cook, which adjusts power levels based on moisture levels in the food. The model also includes a Carousel turntable and a three-speed exhaust fan rated at 400 CFM.
Positioning
The launch reflects how microwave makers are increasingly bundling multiple cooking modes into one appliance. Air frying has become a common add-on in compact ovens and microwaves as manufacturers compete for space on crowded worktops. Flatbed microwave designs have also drawn interest in recent years because they remove the mechanical turntable system and can make it easier to fit larger cookware inside.
Over-the-range microwaves remain a key category in many fitted kitchens, where the unit typically combines cooking with ventilation above a hob. Fan capacity and sensor-driven cooking programmes are frequent comparison points in the segment, alongside cavity size and ease of cleaning.
Sharp's new line spans both portable countertop units and built-in kitchen layouts. The differences in capacity across the range point to distinct use cases, from single or small-household cooking to larger family meal preparation.
David Servos, Senior Director, Smart Life Business Group at Sharp Electronics of Canada, said the products were designed around space and utility.
"Our goal with this launch is simple: give Canadians more functionality without taking up more space," Servos said. "Whether it's the flatbed design that fits larger meals or the 3-in-1 model that replaces three separate appliances, we're focusing on practical tech that actually makes a difference in a busy kitchen."
Availability
The two countertop models are now available through major Canadian retailers. The over-the-range model is scheduled to arrive in late Q2.
The products form part of Sharp Electronics of Canada's broader consumer portfolio, which also includes smart home and audio products, calculators, and other electronics. The company also sells business technology products and services in Canada, including professional displays, interactive touchscreens, laptops, multifunction printers, and IT services.
