Axis launches 360-degree radar for large-site security

Axis Communications has unveiled the AXIS D2124-VE Radar for perimeter and area surveillance across large sites.
The radar provides 360-degree coverage and can detect people at distances of up to 140 metres across an area of 40,000 square metres. It is intended for use in settings such as critical infrastructure, industrial locations and remote sites, where operators often need wide-area monitoring in changing light and weather conditions.
The launch expands Axis' radar range as site operators look to reduce the number of devices needed to monitor large spaces. Instead of relying on multiple sensors to cover a perimeter, the new unit is positioned as a single radar for broad-area detection.
The device includes box-shaped detection and recognition zones intended to make coverage planning easier. It is built on the company's ARTPEC-9 system and can be paired with the AXIS Q6225-LE PTZ Camera.
That connection allows what Axis describes as double-knock verification, in which both radar and video must confirm a detection before an alarm is sent. The setup is designed to support visual verification with fewer false alarms and without human intervention in the checking process.
The unit also includes four integrated dynamic LED strips. These can be used to deter or warn people on site, or switched off when operators want less visible monitoring.
Power use is another part of the product's pitch. Axis says the radar draws an average of 14.8W while covering the full detection area, which it says makes the unit suitable for off-grid deployments and mobile surveillance trailers where energy use matters.
The model supports Power over Ethernet, and PoE out can be used to supply the AXIS Q6225-LE PTZ Camera through an Axis High PoE 120W midspan without a separate cable run. That could simplify installation in large or exposed environments.
Mounting options include poles, rooftops and mobile surveillance trailers. Built-in radar image stabilisation is designed to maintain detection accuracy when the device is exposed to vibration, including in windy conditions.
Product focus
Radar has become a growing category within physical security as operators seek alternatives or complements to conventional camera-led systems. Unlike optical devices, radar can continue detecting movement in darkness, glare, fog and rain, making it more common in border, utility, transport and industrial applications.
For suppliers such as Axis, the challenge has been to combine that resilience with better classification of what triggered an alert. The addition of AI-based object classification reflects a wider industry shift towards filtering out unwanted alarms and reducing the volume of manual checks required in control rooms.

Company scale
Axis is best known for network video surveillance products, but it also sells access control, intercom and audio systems. The Swedish group says it has about 5,000 employees across more than 50 countries and works with technology and systems integration partners worldwide.
The release of the AXIS D2124-VE Radar underlines how security vendors are trying to combine radar, video analytics and automated tracking into a single workflow. In practice, the commercial test for products in this segment is likely to be whether they can cut false alarms, lower installation complexity and reduce the staff time needed to verify incidents across large sites.
