Equinix launches managed AI cloud connectivity service

Equinix has launched Equinix Fabric One, a managed connectivity service for links across AI, cloud and enterprise environments. The service uses open connectivity specifications developed by AWS and Google Cloud.

The product is designed to reduce the manual work involved in building and managing network links between multiple providers, sites and workloads. Customers specify what they want connected, while Equinix manages the underlying routing, cloud links, encryption, resiliency and failover as a single service.

The launch comes as companies face growing complexity in connecting distributed infrastructure for multicloud and AI workloads. Equinix is positioning the service as a way to abstract that complexity, shifting network setup from a component-by-component process to a managed model based on customer intent.

Access will be available through a portal, application programming interfaces, automation workflows, agent-based requests and natural-language prompts. The underlying framework draws on the OpenAPI 3.0 Interconnect specification, an open source standard developed with input from AWS and Google Cloud.

Chris Audie, Chief Product Officer at Equinix, said the traditional model of building enterprise networks one connection at a time no longer fits distributed AI systems.

"For decades, enterprise networks have been built one connection at a time for each partner and provider they depend on. That approach doesn't scale in a world of distributed AI that demands dynamic, flexible and real-time connectivity," said Chris Audie, Chief Product Officer at Equinix.

"Equinix Fabric One will reduce the complexity that's slowing enterprises down by automatically managing connectivity across distributed architectures, based on the customer's intent," Audie said.

Growing complexity

For many organisations, adding connections to clouds, AI providers, partners and branch locations has become a specialist task spanning networking, infrastructure and operations teams. That can delay deployment and make it harder to adapt infrastructure as business requirements change.

"Organisations are increasingly looking for ways to simplify and automate how connectivity is provisioned and managed across distributed cloud and AI environments, but achieving this transformation remains a major challenge. Advances that enable more integrated automation and intent-driven approaches can reduce operational complexity and risk while supporting the flexibility modern AI and multicloud architectures require," Buss said.

The service is built on Equinix's existing interconnection base, which includes more than 10,500 interconnected businesses and about 3,000 cloud and IT providers. Equinix also said eight of the top 10 AI model providers and nine of the top 10 neoclouds already have active deployments on its platform.

The use of an open specification is central to the product's design. Equinix said interoperability across multiple cloud and AI environments should help customers avoid being tied to a single provider while keeping architecture choices open as requirements change.

AWS and Google Cloud, which Equinix named as lead integration partners, linked their support to the open interconnect standard.

"Customers shouldn't have to figure out how to connect across multiple clouds and AI environments on their own," said Robert Kennedy, Vice President of AWS Network Services.

"They should just define what they need and have it work. Fabric One builds on the open interconnect specification that AWS and Google Cloud helped define and delivers exactly that: a managed service that handles the complexity so customers can focus on their AI workloads, not how everything connects," Kennedy said.

Google Cloud made a similar case for simpler links between platforms as AI systems spread across different environments.

"Cross-cloud interoperability is the backbone of the AI era," said Rob Enns, Vice President of Engineering, Cloud Networking, Google Cloud.

"We helped establish the open interconnect specification so enterprises no longer have to manage the complexity of multi-cloud networking. By combining Google Cloud's Cross-Cloud Network capabilities with Equinix Fabric One, we are giving customers an automated, intent-driven network that lets them quickly deploy distributed AI workloads," Enns said.

Customer interest

Equinix also pointed to customer demand for connectivity models that reduce the burden of configuring and maintaining individual network links. That reflects a broader shift in infrastructure consumption toward managed services and automated operations.

"As technology environments become more distributed, AI workloads and multicloud architectures require connectivity that is flexible, scalable and easier to manage," said Paul Hager, CEO of Hyundai AutoEver America.

"Equinix Fabric One has the potential to accelerate our efforts to meet those needs," Hager said.

Equinix said Fabric One is expected to enter beta later this year, with general availability planned for 2027 and an initial rollout in North America.
