StarTech.com has launched a USB4 docking station with driverless dual-display support for MacBooks. It also works with Windows and Linux laptops.

Called the Driverless Dual 4K USB4 Universal Docking Station, the device is aimed at IT teams that want one dock for mixed laptop estates without installing software. According to StarTech.com, it supports native dual displays on MacBooks through USB4, which it describes as a first in this category.

That matters because multi-monitor support on Apple laptops has often pushed businesses toward Thunderbolt docks, which tend to cost more. StarTech.com is positioning the new dock as a lower-cost option for organisations running a mix of Mac, Windows and Linux systems.

The dock supports dual displays on M3, M4 and M5 MacBooks. It includes dual DisplayPort outputs supporting up to 4K at 144Hz, although that setting requires Display Stream Compression and applies to M4 Pro, M4 Max and M5 systems.

Alongside display output, the dock combines data, networking and charging through a single connection. It includes 100W power delivery for laptops, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, two USB-C ports and three USB-A ports for peripherals.

IT focus

The lack of drivers is central to the launch. In corporate environments, software dependencies can complicate laptop imaging, increase support requests and create compatibility issues across operating systems, especially at scale.

StarTech.com says the dock is designed to avoid those problems by relying on native support rather than software installation. That should help IT departments standardise on a single docking setup across USB and Thunderbolt-equipped laptops.

The dock also includes a screw-locking USB-C host cable, intended to reduce accidental disconnections or unauthorised removal in shared desks and managed office environments where devices are frequently connected and disconnected.

Compatibility testing

StarTech.com says it tested the dock with more than 100 monitors in its Innovation Lab to check display compatibility across a range of real-world setups. The goal was to reduce the risk of display issues when the dock is deployed with different business monitor models and laptop configurations.

The company says the product is intended to provide a single standard across fleets that include both USB and Thunderbolt systems. The approach reflects a broader effort by businesses to reduce the number of accessories and exceptions they must manage as hybrid working and mixed-device estates persist.

John Mardinly, Director of Product Management at StarTech.com, highlighted that position in a statement on the launch.

"Organisations want fewer exceptions and more compatibility consistency across their device environments," Mardinly said. "StarTech.com's new USB4 Docking Station allows IT teams to deploy one dock across their USB and Thunderbolt fleet, with native driverless support that works reliably across operating systems and offers a lower total cost of ownership compared to existing options."

The launch also includes a smaller product for mobile users. StarTech.com says its USB4 Multiport Adapter offers similar USB4 connectivity in a more compact format for people working away from a fixed desk setup.

The new dock enters a market where manufacturers are trying to simplify peripheral support as businesses use a broader mix of laptop platforms. For Apple users in particular, external display support remains a key point of difference between basic USB docks, software-based docking products and premium Thunderbolt hardware.

Founded in 1985, StarTech.com makes connectivity accessories including docking stations, adapters, cables, network products and mounts. It operates in 28 markets across five continents, according to the company.

The dock and multiport adapter are available through StarTech.com and IT channel partners including CDW, Amazon, Ingram Micro, TD SYNNEX and D&H.
