AirConsole, Volkswagen and The Tetris Company have unveiled an in-car version of Tetris for the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas in North America. The game was shown publicly in the vehicle at New York Comic Con.

The demonstration put Tetris on the Atlas infotainment screen, with players using their smartphones as controllers. Up to four players can take part in multiplayer modes when the vehicle is parked.

The launch builds on AirConsole's work with Volkswagen in the US. Volkswagen recently added the gaming platform to selected 2027 model-year vehicles, including the Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Golf GTI, Golf R and ID. Buzz.

According to the companies, that made Volkswagen the first high-volume automotive brand in the US to offer AirConsole. The latest collaboration adds one of the most widely recognised video game brands to that in-car line-up.

How it works

The version of Tetris on display includes several play modes: Sprint, in which players race to clear 40 lines; Marathon, which follows the classic scoring format; Battle, where players compete directly against each other; and Online Battle, which connects players with other players or private groups.

The Atlas also links gameplay to the car's ambient lighting system. As players clear lines, the cabin lighting changes in real time to match the colour of the cleared line.

AirConsole is part of Volkswagen's In-Vehicle Premium package and requires an active myVW+ subscription. Users open the AirConsole app from the infotainment menu, scan an on-screen QR code with a smartphone, and then use the phone as a controller.

The service is available only when the vehicle is parked. Some models also require the parking brake to be engaged before the game can start.

Entertainment push

The collaboration is being used to test consumer appetite for games as part of the in-car entertainment offering. Carmakers are increasingly turning to software, subscription services and digital content to widen revenue streams and make vehicle interiors more appealing as screens become larger and more central to the driving experience.

For AirConsole, the Volkswagen agreement offers a route to a broader US audience through a mainstream carmaker rather than a niche or luxury segment. N-Dream, the Zurich-based company behind the platform, already supplies in-car gaming to brands including BMW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Tata.

Anthony Cliquot, Chief Executive Officer of N-Dream, said the setting was a natural fit for the product. "Bringing AirConsole and Tetris to the new Volkswagen Atlas at New York Comic Con is a perfect match. The event brings together exactly the kind of fans who will love what AirConsole does. It's a place where people come to celebrate the stories and games that shaped them, while always looking forward to what's next. Having a timeless and globally recognized title like Tetris here makes it the perfect setting to showcase how we're bringing entertainment to the car-an environment where people are spending more and more of their time."

Volkswagen described the initiative as part of a broader effort to make time inside the vehicle more social for occupants. The Atlas, one of the brand's key larger models in the US, provides a prominent test case for adding interactive content beyond video and audio.

Rachael Zaluzec, Chief Marketing Officer of Volkswagen of America, said: "New York Comic Con brings together communities built around shared passions and experiences. That makes it the perfect place to showcase how AirConsole can help turn time spent in a vehicle into something social, engaging and fun. We're excited to give fans a chance to experience Tetris in the Atlas and see firsthand how Volkswagen is creating new ways for people to connect."

Recognisable title

The choice of Tetris gives the programme a familiar title with broad appeal across age groups. The Tetris brand dates back to 1984 and remains one of the best-known names in video games, with hundreds of millions of units sold worldwide.

Maya Rogers, Chief Executive Officer of The Tetris Company, said the collaboration shows how the game is adapting to new settings. "Tetris is one of the most recognized and iconic video game brands in the world, and this is the latest step in how it keeps evolving alongside new players and new technology. Bringing Tetris into Volkswagen vehicles with AirConsole turns the Atlas into a multiplayer arcade for fans to enjoy. We can't wait for fans at New York Comic Con to try it for themselves."
