Volkswagen of America has introduced AirConsole in-vehicle gaming for select 2027 models, becoming the first volume automotive brand in the US to offer the feature.

AirConsole will be available on the 2027 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Golf GTI, Golf R and ID. Buzz. Occupants can play games on the infotainment screen while the vehicle is parked, using compatible smartphones as controllers after scanning a QR code displayed on screen.

The launch line-up includes 20 games, including PAC-MAN Championship Edition, UNO Car Party! and Tetris. Volkswagen said Tetris is making its North American debut as an in-car gaming experience through AirConsole in its vehicles.

The addition expands a growing range of software-led services from carmakers as they seek to make greater use of infotainment systems and connected subscriptions. Volkswagen is bundling AirConsole with its In-Vehicle Premium package, which also includes Wi-Fi hotspot access, navigation and speech functions, depending on the model.

For buyers of the 2027 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan and Golf models, the package includes three months of access from the date of purchase. The ID. Buzz includes one year. After that, access to AirConsole and other connected features requires an active subscription priced at USD $149 per year.

Customers must enrol an eligible vehicle through the myVW app and accept the relevant terms to use the gaming service. The feature also requires a compatible infotainment system, vehicle connectivity and a compatible smartphone.

Gaming focus

The platform comes from N-Dream, the company behind AirConsole. It uses phones and other smart devices as controllers, removing the need for separate gaming hardware inside the vehicle.

In supported models and trims, some games will also interact with the vehicle's interior lighting. Ambient lighting can respond to gameplay, and several titles will include branded content created specifically for Volkswagen vehicles.

One custom version of PAC-MAN replaces power pellets with Volkswagen logos and bonus fruits with Volkswagen vehicles. Other titles, including Golazo! and Memory Match, will also feature Volkswagen-branded elements.

The launch highlights the importance of the North American video game market and the growing overlap between consumer electronics and automotive software. Carmakers have been expanding digital services to create new recurring revenue streams and differentiate the in-car experience beyond traditional driving features.

Rachael Zaluzec, Chief Marketing Officer at Volkswagen of America, described the launch as part of a broader effort to make time spent in the vehicle more social for passengers.

"Volkswagen is committed to creating experiences that bring people together and make every interaction with our brand more meaningful," said Rachael Zaluzec, Chief Marketing Officer at Volkswagen of America. "In-vehicle gaming helps turn everyday moments into shared experiences, giving families and friends a new way to connect, laugh, and spend time together while enjoying their Volkswagen."

N-Dream also pointed to the scale of the regional gaming market as a reason for the rollout. AirConsole is already offered through several automotive groups internationally, and the Volkswagen launch gives it a broader route into the US mass market.

"North America is the world's largest gaming market. Launching AirConsole with Volkswagen in this region will not only entertain millions of people, but also make the in-vehicle experience richer," said Anthony Cliquot, Chief Executive Officer of N-Dream. "At N-Dream, our vision is to turn in-between time while on the go into memorable moments and experiences."
